Monaco : Technical news

Brawn BGP001 - rear floor modifications

Ever evolving, for Monaco the Brawn features new rear suspension geometry and dampers to cope better with Monte Carlo's need for more suspension travel. Retained from Barcelona is the new floor, with a cut out (1) in the middle section and an additional inlet (2) to accelerate the airflow in the central section.

Red Bull RB5 - revised rear wing

Introduced in at the last round in Barcelona, Red Bull Racing have retained this rear-wing change for the Monaco street circuit. The slot in the middle of the flap (red arrow) increases downforce, a crucial commodity on the low-speed Monte Carlo track. An identical solution has also been introduced at sister team Toro Rosso on their STR4.

Ferrari F60 - revised front wing

For Monaco (upper circle) Ferrari have modified their new front-wing end plate along similar lines to Brawn, with the additional outer element now taller (previous Barcelona version in lower circle), to better channel the air away from the front tyres. Strangely, this solution doesn't give a big increase in front downforce, but rather improves the efficiency of the central section of the rear diffuser. Some extra downforce has been realised, however, through the placement of two small gurney tabs on the rear of the wing elements (red arrow).

Ferrari F60 - rear-end packaging

For Monaco, Ferrari have slightly modified the 'B' version of the F60 introduced in Barcelona. The 'coke-bottle' section at the rear has been revised to improve cooling and the team have been able to close the engine-cover opening that featured in Spain. Note the teeth in the section of floor around the rear wheel. These are to help reduce the vortices created by the rear tyres.

Red Bull RB5 - twin diffuser

Finally on track in Monaco is the complete 'B' version of the RB5, complete with Brawn-inspired twin diffuser (red arrow). Both cars are also equipped with the new carbon fibre gearbox, which was used only by Webber at the last round in Spain.

McLaren MP4-24 - new rear wing

McLaren have introduced a completely new rear wing for Monaco, with a big slot in the middle of the front of the main plane. The central hole, which is much bigger and more sophisticated in shape compared to the previous solution, is a concept initially introduced by Toyota at Monaco 2005 and used this season by Ferrari in the main plane, and by Red Bull and Toro Rosso in the flap, as you can see in the Red Bull rear wing drawing from earlier this weekend.
