Toyota TF109 - cockpit strakes

A new feature on the Toyota in Germany was these triangular strakes on the side of the cockpit, immediately ahead of the sidepods. Their purpose is to realign the airflow and reduce the amount of lift on the top of the leading edge of the sidepod. The team also ran a new, Nurburgring-specific, high downforce rear wing. Toyota may not have scored points in Germany, but the updated TF109 did show some impressive pace, with Jarno Trulli clocking the second fastest race lap.

Renault R29 - new front wing endplates

Renault introduced this new front wing endplate on Fernando Alonso's car in Germany at the weekend. Notable features are the strange, curved shape at the rear of the endplate and the new longitudinal slot (black arrow), also seen previously on the Toyota. The slot acts as a kind of sealing skirt for the endplate, accelerating airflow and directing it outwards, hence allowing the front wing to work more efficiently.
