SILVERSTONE LAP GUIDE – LEWIS

“The Santander British Grand Prix is one of my favourite races because it’s my home grand prix. It’s a phenomenal place, and it’s got great history too – it’s one of the older circuits on the calendar and has so much more character than some of the newer places we visit.

“There are so many highlights around here: you’re doing almost 190mph into Copse, you downshift one gear and briefly lift – no brakes – as the car bounces around under huge g-forces. You’re up to 200mph before Becketts – there are four parts: the first two are flat-out, then it’s down one gear for the left-hander before going down another gear for the right-hander that bends out onto the Hangar Straight. Because you’re not braking, you’re just pulling huge g at high speed and the car wants to step out all the time. It’s probably the most exciting part of the track.

“Stowe is another quick corner and then the course starts to tighten up: Club is one of the slower corners but the exit opens up and, as you shift up through the gears, the rear is always stepping out. You have to constantly correct the car.

“Abbey is a tricky chicane: third gear, you slide through the first left-hander but need to miss the second apex because you’re fully on the car. Hit it and you’ll suffer an oversteer moment. Every time I went through there last year I could see the crowd jumping up and cheering me on, because other people were spinning.

“Bridge is flat but you need to get the car over to the right of the track for Priory, which is blind and tricky – it’s a corner I always struggle with, for some reason. You’re early on the brakes and turn-in for Priory, where it’s easy to spin the car and end up in the gravel. The bumps on the entry to Brooklands unsettle the car but it’s vital to get a good exit, you take all the kerb and some of the grass, to get up to maximum speed for the start/finish straight.”
